5 years ago, I spray painted this outside of my former shotgun apartment that myself, my ex-boyfriend and three other people had been forced to move out of the previous year. It was the week before Mardi Gras and I figured the tourists who were staying there should know a little history about the place.
Luckily, my more popular friend shared it and this picture went viral, igniting the much needed discourse on Airbnbs and their horrific impact on a city like New Orleans.
Today City council is finally voting on potentially reining in these whole home Airbnb predators. New Orleans is a city that is famous for its artists, musicians, and overall laissez-faire creatives. Those qualities are not conducive to the cutthroat corporate world that has descended on our city. If I ever saw a politician, do something truly progressive I might die of shock, but here's to hoping that the people of New Orleans will be considered and protected for a change
