Holiday rental company Stayz has slammed the decision to double rates for properties used as short term accommodation in one capital city.
Hobart City Council announced last month it will double rates for owners who operate entire homes as short stay accommodation in a bid to address the city's housing shortage.
However the decision has sparked criticism among holiday rental companies, with Stayz corporate affairs director Eacham Curry warning the move will have a "detrimental impact" on Tasmania's tourism sector.
Mr Curry also warned the move places another "financial burden" on homeowners, who choose to use short stay rental accommodation to generate extra income amid a cost of living crisis.
"The imposition of yet another financial burden on homeowners simply because they choose to use STRA to generate extra income, will have a particularly significant detrimental impact on areas which rely on tourism in Tasmania," he told Skynews.com.au on Monday.
